Preparing for Winter – October brings colder evenings, and we know winter is right around the corner. To quote an old report we have, "The measurement of precipitation in the form of snow is a difficult task . . ." Enclosed is a memo with directions to winterize your raingage and service the collector backup battery at your site. Please fill out and return the winterizing questionnaire to CAL by December 15th. Remember: For samples removed after winterizing, check "Yes" in Block 4.4 of the FORF.
Raingage Antifreeze Recommendations – All NADP raingages require the addition of antifreeze during cold months for accurate frozen precipitation measurements and to protect the gage. Please note the following precautions:
  • You will need to stir the antifreeze, as the water/antifreeze mixture will stratify as precipitation accumulates, allowing water to freeze on the surface.
  • Adding antifreeze to a NOAH-IV or Ott Pluvio raingage may cause "false positives" that need to be screened form the data. Always fote on the field form that antifreeze was added or stirred and the date and time that it was added. Also add the same note in the e-mail when the data files are submitted.
  • To empty your Egage, use a gage siphon. Contact the CAL if you need one.
  • We recommend the use of "low toxicity" antifreezes, which are typically composed of propylene glycol. While such antifreeze mixtures are considered safer for animals, we suggest they be disposed of in a sanitary sewer (if allowed by local regulation) rather than dumping the used mixture on the ground
Electric Raingage Reminders – E-mail the PDA data the same day you collect the sample. E-mail data to nadp-precipication@isws.illinois.edu. Remember to include precipitation types on the FORF. Precipitation types are not included in the electronic data file. Types are based on your observations and best knowledge. After submission, you can review electronic raingage data online at http://nadp.isws.illinois.edu/precip/. It should appear automatically after you submit it. If you have any concerns about electronic data on the preliminary data report, please bring them to our attention.

2010 NADP Annual Reports
There are several enclosures in this month’s preliminary data report:
  • 2010 Annual and Seasonal Data Summary – Parts 1 and 2 of the summary are available to all users on the NADP web site via a link on your site’s individual web page at: http://nadp.isws.illinois.edu/nadpdata/ntnsites.asp. Part 3 of the summary, entitled "Summary of Invalid Samples" is enclosed in this mailing but is not available on-line. We hope the information in Part 3 might be helpful in maintaining or improving data completeness at your site.
  • NTN Valid Samples and NADP Completeness Criteria – This memo describes how NADP validates weekly sample chemistry data and outlines the minimum amount of valid data required from each site to be included in the NADP’s annual map report.
  • NADP Reports Memo from the Program Office – This memo describes the 2010 map summary report and requests a list of any publications that you have prepared which use NADP data.
  • Availablity of NTN and AIRMoN Archive SamplesThis memo describes archived sample filters and precipitation samples available from the Central Analytical Laboratory.
  • 2010 Annual Summary Report – This report includes annual summary maps from each of the NADP networks. This report, and reports from past years, are also available on the NADP web site at:http://nadp.isws.illinois.edu/lib/dataReports.aspx.
If you have questions or concerns about your site's performance in 2010, please contact us at 1-800-952-7353 or e-mail ntn@isws.illinois.edu.

12/11

2012 NADP Calendar – A copy of the 2012 NADP Calendar is enclosed. It includes reminders or site maintenance and equipment operations for all NADP networks. Link to the file: 2012 NADP Calendar
Barcodes – A six-month supply of barcode labels and an explanatory memo was mailed to all NTN site operators. As a reminder, use two identical labels per sample submitted: place one label on the NTN FORF and the identical label on the outside of the bottle bag, or on the back of the Dry Sample return envelope.
Invalid Samples Report – Enclosed with this mailing is a report detailing the invalidated samples from your site since 1/1/2011. The format is similar to the 2010 Annual Summary you received in last month’s mailing. Please contact the CAL if you have any questions or concerns about the report. Note that the sample validation status is subject to review and modification.
Winterization Reminders
  • Always allow your sample to thaw completely before decanting it from the bucket. Removing ice without thawing completely will bias the chemistry data.
  • Remember to add antifreeze to your raingage as needed, and to periodically stir the mix in the gage.
    • Sites with Egages must always have an antifreeze-water mix in their gage. Water freezing in the gage will crack the collection bucket and damage the gage. Water should be added in an approximate 60/40 – 70/30 antifreeze/water ratio. Pure antifreeze captures moisture from the air and can bias the readings.
    • Pluvio 2 Egages should use 2 full gallons of antifreeze mixed with 1 gallon of water. There should be enough antifreeze-water mixture to cover the bottom of the gage.
  • Always note on the field form that antifreeze was added or stirred, and the date/time it was added. Also add the same note in the e-mail when Egage data files are submitted.
  • To empty your Egage, use a gage siphon. Contact the CAL if you need one.
Site Birthdays – Congratulations to the NADP sites recently celebrating birthdays! 10 years: CAN5, CA50; 15 years: MN01, MN08, MN28, MN99; 25 years: CO93, CO94, MS19, WI09; 30 years: CA99, MA01, ME98, MO03, MO05.
