How to Find Us

Reminder: Change your Collector Lid Seal – By now, all sites should have received a replacement lid seal, either in your large supply box or mailed separately.  If you haven’t already done so, please change the lid seal under the roof of your precipitation collector. Instructions are included with the new lid seal. This annual maintenance procedure will prevent windblown material from entering the bucket and reduce sample loss due to evaporation.
Keep A Copy of Sample FORF – Please remember to keep the bottom pink copy of your field form at your site. The CAL may occasionally contact you to receive a copy of the record; for example, if a sample is lost in shipment. We suggest that you retain the previous two years of records in a binder or file folder.

Invalid Sample Reports – Included with this month's mailing is a report detailing the invalidated samples from your site since 1/1/2011.  Please contact the CAL if you have any questions or concerns about the report. Note that the sample validation status is subject to review and modification.

NADP Fall Meeting Abstract Deadline Extended – The deadline for submitting abstracts for oral and poster presentations at the 2011 annual NADP meeting has been extended to Monday, August 15.  For more information, see http://nadp.isws.illinois.edu/nadp2011/.

Congratulations to Site CO96, Molas Pass, for 25 years of operations as of July 29!

350,000th NTN Sample – The CAL congratulates Peggy Seekers at AL10 for collecting the 350,000th NADP/NTN sample on July 26th. Peggy has served as the site operator at the Black Belt Research & Extension Center since January 1989.

Site Personnel and Equipment Reports – Included with this month's mailing is a detailed listing of all individuals associated with your site based on our records. The back of the report includes a detailed list of equipment and other information about your site. Please verify this information, and send us any updates.

Don’t Forget to Clean Dry-Side Bucket and Lid Seal - On the first Tuesday of each month, you should clean the lid seal and dry-side bucket after securing the previous week’s sample. Rinse out the dry-side bucket with deionized water and thoroughly clean the rim with laboratory wipes and deionized water. It is not necessary to change the bucket unless it is cracked or damaged. Also clean the bottom surface of the lid seal. To do this, trigger the sensor, and unplug the collector while the lid is between the two buckets.

Remember: Weigh All Wet-Side Buckets – We realize that much of the U.S. has undergone a dry spell this summer. However, it is important to change the wet-side bucket each week to prevent the accumulation of dust that will bias the chemistry of the rain samples when it does rain. We ask that you weigh each bucket and lid, and report this information on the field form. This provides a check of your scale accuracy, and ensures that every site does replace the bucket each week.

Congratulations to the following NADP sites celebrating birthdays this month: FL05 (15 years), AZ03 (30 years), AZ99 (30 years), NJ99 (30 years), and WY99 (30 years).

Have a Backup Operator – We recommend that each site have one or more backup operators to provide assistance if you are unable to serve the site due to vacation, illness, etc. Now is a good time of year to touch base with your site’s backup operator to ensure continuous operation through the winter holidays. As a reminder, NADP samples are only valid if the bucket is deployed less than 194 hours (8 days + 2 hours). Shorter period samples are considered valid, and it is permissible to remove the bucket on a day other than Tuesday if vacation or illness prevents servicing the site on that day.

Lid Seal Change Reminder - If you haven’t already done so, please change the lid seal under the roof of your precipitation collector. Also, complete and return the form included with the installation memo to the CAL.

We Need Your Extra Belfort Charts and Equipment Parts – Many sites upgraded from Belfort raingages to Egages this summer. If you have an Egage, and no longer wish to operate your Belfort gage, please return your unused Belfort charts to us in your next used materials shipment. (Feel free to return the ink as well, but please make sure you put it in a plastic bag to prevent spillage.) We will send the supplies to other sites. Now is also a good time to search around your site for any broken collector or raingage parts that need to be returned to the Network Equipment Depot.

New Electronic Report Option – The CAL now offers the option to receive your reports both in hard copy via postal mail, and electronically via e-mail. The electronic copy is exactly the same in format as the hardcopy; for an example, see http://go.illinois.edu/NTNPrelimExample. If you would like to start receiving your reports electronically, please e-mail cal@isws.illinois.edu. Indicate whether you wish to receive only electronic reports, or both electronic and hardcopy reports. Please verify that your preferred e-mail address is correct as indicated above; this address is used to send electronic reports.
