Clean Supplies Shipments
- Please help our Shipping/Receiving team help you by
following these reminders: |
|
|
 |
- Our goal is to have 6 to 12 complete sets of
clean supplies (bucket/lid/bottle/box) at each site. (For
example, 1 bucket on the collector, 5 buckets/lids/bottles
in your clean materials box, and 6 used supplies in transit
to/from the CAL.) If you have more than 12 sets of clean
supplies, return the extras in your next box to the CAL. If
you are short supplies, the CAL will adjust appropriately
based on the inventory you provide on the
bright pink label.
- Complete the bright pink label
each time you return a
used supplies box. This helps us ensure you have an adequate
number of supplies at your site.
- The second-to-last bucket contains a reminder
that there are 2 weeks of supplies remaining in the box.
Contact the CAL at this point if you have not received a new
box of clean supplies.
- Request needed supplies on your field form
early. The CAL sends out requested supplies in boxes
returned to sites.

New Flexible Lids Available
– The CAL is evaluating a new, much more flexible bucket lid.
Please let us know if you’d like to try them. |
|
Annual Vegetation Trimming –
During the spring and early summer it is important to monitor the
vegetation height around your collector. All vegetation needs
to be kept below 0.6 meter (2 feet) in height within a 5 meter
radius of the collector (see page 5-2, NTN Site Operations Manual).
The site should not be mowed too frequently; this will actually
increase wind-blown material which could contaminate the sample. |

Raingage Summerization for Warm Season Operation – When the threat of
snow or ice storms pass for your site, your raingage should be "summerized."
-
Belfort Raingages: Enclosed are instructions for summerizing procedures.
-
Electronic Raingages: There are no special procedures for summerizing; just
discontinue the use of antifreeze in the raingage bucket.
We ask
all sites to complete the enclosed “Summerizing” questionnaire. Be sure to
verify the condition of your collector’s back-up battery as noted. Also,
please note whether you follow Daylight Savings Time (DST) for times
reported on the FORF. Reminder: Complete FORF BLOCK 4.4 to indicate
raingage status.

Lid Seal
Change– The CAL will begin shipping replacement lid seals in the next large box of
supplies sent to your site. On or before July 5, please change the lid seal
on the roof of your precipitation collector. Instructions are included with
the new seal. |

Clean Your Collector Sensor –
Birds love to sit on the collector sensor head
and leave their mark. Debris on the sensor can cause the collector to stay
open during dry periods. Clean the sensor after removing the wet-side bucket
and securing the previous week's sample:
-
Irrigate the sensor with distilled
water or alcohol to open the collector
-
Using a toothbrush, gently scrub the
area between the sensor grid and plate
-
Avoid bending the grid and leave no
brush residue trapped in the sensor
-
Again, irrigate the sensor to rinse
away any loosened residue
-
Blow any remaining liquid off the
sensor to allow the collector lid to return to the wet-side position
