2009 Annual and Seasonal Data Summary

Enclosed is your 2009 Annual and Seasonal Data Summary. Parts 1 and 2 of the summary are available to all users on the NADP Web site. Part 3 of the summary, entitled “Summary of Invalid Samples” is enclosed in this mailing but is not available on-line.
We hope the information in Part 3 might be helpful in maintaining or improving data completeness at your site. It begins with a Key that describes the invalidation codes, including references to the National Trends Network Site Operation Manual, where you can find complete descriptions of standard procedures. It ends with the list of 2009 Invalid Samples, including the Sample ID, Dates On and Off, and Cause for Invalidation.
Every year, the NADP produces annual average concentration and deposition maps. A printed copy of the maps is included with this mailing. The color maps show data from sites that met the NADP data completeness criteria. For a description of data completeness, see the enclosed explanatory memo.

If you have questions or concerns about your site's performance in 2009, please contact us at 1-800-952-7353 or e-mail ntn@isws.illinois.edu.

Invalid Samples Report – Enclosed with this mailing is a report detailing the invalidated samples from your site since 1/1/2010.  The format is similar to the 2009 Annual Summary you received in last month’s report. Please contact the CAL if you have any questions or concerns about the report. Note that the sample validation status is subject to review and modification.
Please Return Your Extra Lids – We’ve gotten your feedback on our shipment of new bucket lids: We realize how rigid they are, and that you are having problems fitting them on the bucket. Unfortunately, the flexible lids we’ve purchased previously are not unavailable. If you have any extra lids at your site, please return them to us in your next used materials shipment.
Return your Winterization Memo – If you have not already done so, please remember to return the winterizing questionnaire by December 15. For samples removed after winterizing the raingage, check “Yes” in block 4.4 of the FORF.
Delrin Bushing Replacement – If you received replacement bushings for your collector, replace the bushings before the weather gets worse. Remember to note the date of the change on the Field Observer Report Form (FORF).
Upcoming CAL Holidays – The CAL will be closed on December 24, 27, and 31. We will check e-mail and voice mail on these days. If you need technical support, please don’t hesitate to call or e-mail us. The CAL will continue to receive samples and clean and return supplies over the holidays. The CAL will resume a normal schedule on Monday January 3, 2011.

Barcode Label Supply – A one year’s supply of barcode labels will be sent to all NTN site operators with this month’s mailing. There will be an explanatory memo sent with the labels. As a reminder, use two identical labels per sample submitted: place one label on the NTN FORF and the identical label on the outside of the bottle bag (or on the back of your Dry Sample Envelope).

Special Reminder to Egage sites – Please make sure that your electronic raingage has a fresh supply of antifreeze at all times.  Allowing water to freeze in the bucket will damage it. If you add fresh antifreeze, or stir the existing antifreeze, please make a note on your FORF, and in the email sent with the electronic precipitation data.

Siphons Available for Egages – You should avoid removing the collection container in your Egage. Dropping it will permanently damage the Egage load cell. Each Egage site should have a siphon to remove the water (or antifreeze) in the gage. If you need one, please call 1-800-952-7353 or email ntn@isws.illinois.edu.

Ambient Sensor Heater Checks – At sites with snow or frozen precipitation, besure to to check each week that the collector sensor is heating correctly. The sensor has two heat settings: The lower heat setting keeps the sensor just warm enough to melt frozen precipitation; the higher heat setting is designed to dry off the sensor. Check the lower heat setting by sprinkling a few flakes of snow onto the sensor plate. The snow should quickly melt and open the collector lid. Check the higher heat setting by allowing the melted snow to remain on the sensor. The sensor should become hot to the touch, dry the melted snow, and cause the collector lid to close in approximately 7-10 minutes. If the snow doesn’t melt or the collector lid fails to close in a timely fashion, contact the CAL for a replacement sensor.
