Insect trouble? Now that we’re in the heart of summer wasps and
hornets may be nesting underneath your collector. If you need to
spray wasp/hornet killer below the collector, please remember to do
this after securing the sample and before deploying your next clean
bucket. The dry side bucket should also be removed during any
spraying. After spraying is completed, the entire collector should
be rinsed with deionized water and wiped down with Kimwipes. |

Summer cleaning –
Before the weather turns colder, we’d like to remind you about collector
cleaning and site maintenance activities . On the first Tuesday of every
month you should perform the following cleaning steps. Be sure to first
remove the previous week’s sample.
-
Change the dry-side bucket.
You should use two dry-side buckets in rotation. One bucket should
be installed on the dry-side of the collector and the other cleaned
and bagged as described in Section 3.2.3.1 in the Site Operations
Manual. Both buckets should be plainly marked in permanent
marker: DRY-SIDE USE ONLY.
-
Cle
an the underside of the lid
seal. Use a clean, lint-free tissue dampened with distilled water
(when the temperatures are below freezing, just use a lint-free
tissue). Wipe loose dirt from the lid surfaces. Allow the lid seal
to air dry.
-
As needed on a weekly basis,
clean the rim of the dry-side bucket thoroughly using a clean,
lint-free tissue dampened with distilled water. Be sure to remove
any dirt or bird droppings.
-
If your current dry-side
bucket is cracked or otherwise unusable, the CAL can provide a
replacement one from its stock of “extra” buckets. Simply write
“Need dry side bucket” on your FORF, and the CAL will ship one in
your next box of clean supplies. (You’ll still receive your usual
set of 6 clean supplies.)

Preparing for Winter—
Enclosed is a memo with directions to winterize your raingage, once
mixed or freezing precipitation is forecast in your area. Instructions
are included to service the collector backup battery at your site.
Please fill out and return the colored winterizing questionnaire to the
CAL by December 15th. Remember: For samples removed after winterizing
the raingage, check “Yes” in Block 4.4 of the FORF. |
|
Special Winterization Reminder for Electronic Raingage
Sites – Adding antifreeze to a NOAH-IV or Ott Pluvio raingage may cause
“false positives” that need to be screened from the data. Always note
on the field form that antifreeze was added and the date and time that it
was added. Also add the same note in the email when the data files are
submitted.
- Approximately one business day after submission, you
can review electronic raingage data online at
http://nadp.isws.illinois.edu/precip/
- If you have any concerns about electronic raingage
data on the preliminary data report, please bring them to our attention.
