Registration is Open for the Fall 2009 NADP Operator’s Training Course – See enclosed letter.

Electronic Raingage Reminders:

  • E-mail the PDA data the same day you collect the sample – Email data to nadp-precip@isws.illinois.edu

  • Remember to include precipitation types on the FORF – Precipitation types are not included in the electronic data file. Types are based on your observations and best knowledge.

  • Approximately one business day after submission, you can review electronic raingage data online at http://nadp.isws.illinois.edu/precip/

  • If you have any concerns about electronic raingage data on the preliminary data report, please bring them to our attention.

Dry Sample Envelopes Reminders:

  • Return unused 1-L bottles for dry weeks – Bottles should be returned in your next used supply shipment to the CAL. Bottles are washed and reused.

  • Do not discard any wet samples – If there is any liquid in the wet-side bucket, no matter how little, you must decant it into a 1-L bottle and ship the sample as normal. The CAL can analyze as little as 8 mL of precipitation.

Have you changed your collector lid seal for this year?  All sites have been shipped a new lid seal. It should be replaced by the end of July, 2009. Please be sure to return the used lid seal and questionnaire with your next used materials shipment to CAL.

2008 Annual and Seasonal Data Summary

Enclosed is your 2008 Annual and Seasonal Data Summary. Parts 1 and 2 of the summary are available to all users on the NADP Web site. Part 3 of the summary, entitled “Summary of Invalid Samples” is enclosed in this mailing but is not available on-line.

We hope the information in Part 3 might be helpful in maintaining or improving data completeness at your site. It begins with a Key that describes the invalidation codes, including references to the National Trends Network Site Operation Manual, where you can find complete descriptions of standard procedures. It ends with the list of 2008 Invalid Samples, including the Sample ID, Dates On and Off, and Cause for Invalidation.

Every year, the NADP produces annual average concentration and deposition maps. A printed copy of the maps will be included with your preliminary data report later this fall. The color maps show data from sites that met the NADP data completeness criteria. For a description of data completeness, see “What is data completeness?” and “How are data completeness criteria applied?” in the enclosed explanatory memo. The memo offers suggestions on “What can be done to reduce invalid samples.”

Preparing for Winter— September is the time to think about winterizing your site. Enclosed is a memo with directions to winterize your raingage and service the collector backup battery at your site. Please fill out and return the red winterizing questionnaire to the CAL by December 15th. Remember: For samples removed after winterizing, check “Yes” in Block 4.4 of the FORF.
We don’t mean to “bug” you – An automatic email is triggered each time a sample is received at the CAL for electronic raingage sites when no data is available in database. Please continue to download data to your PDA promptly, and email it to nadp-precip@isws.illinois.edu. If you have already uploaded data, please disregard the automatic message. Occasionally, there is a day or two lag between when you upload data and it’s posted to our database. Once posted, electronic data are available online at http://nadp.isws.illinois.edu/precip/
Special Winterization Reminder for Electronic Raingage Sites – Adding antifreeze to a NOAH-IV or Ott Pluvio raingage may cause “false positives” that need to be screened from the data. Always note on the field form that antifreeze was added and the date and time that it was added. Also add the same note in the email when the data files are submitted.
