10/02

Greetings out there in NADP land. In northern climates, it’s that time of year when the green shades of summer are giving way to golden, yellow, red, and purple fall colors. That means it’s time to ask whether your field equipment is ready for cold weather, snow, and ice. Reminder – Please complete and return the raingage winterization memo sent last month.

The 2003 CALendar is included in this mailing. This year it features sites that will be celebrating a 20th birthday in 2003. We want to thank everyone who submitted pictures. Your help is greatly appreciated! If you need additional copies, or if you have comments or suggestions, please contact Sarah Milton at 217-333-7053 or smilton@sws.uiuc.edu.

NEW DATA REPORT ON WEB SITE–The NADP 2001 Annual Summary can be found on the NADP web site at http://nadp.sws.uiuc.edu/lib/data/2001as.pdf. Take a close look at the cover. The accent http://nadp.sws.uiuc.edu/lib/data/2001as.pdf.is on total deposition, not just the wet deposition measured by NADP but wet + dry deposition. A related program, the Clean Air Status and Trends Network (CASTNet) reports dry deposition, in other words deposition that occurs when precipitation is not occurring. The cover map shows the combination of wet + dry sulfur deposition. While you’re on the Web, why not see the latest additions to the CAL Web site, too.

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve fall on Tuesday this year. We thought this would be a good time to summarize the NADP rules for abnormal sampling periods to guide you with your plans for site operation over the holidays.

Sample duration rule: Any sample < 194 hours (8 days and 2 hours) in duration qualifies as a valid sample for the NADP Annual Summary (the report with the maps). If you modify your routine, keep all samples within that duration, if possible, and return to the Tuesday at 0900 sample change schedule as soon as you can. [Example: You change the bucket on Monday afternoon (12/23/02), you process and ship it, then you change the next week’s bucket on Monday 12/30/02 at the regular time (or up until the 31st at a time < 2 hours after you changed it on the 23rd). In this example both samples will meet the sample duration criteria. The first one (off 12/23/02) is short one day but that's OK, the second one (off 12/30/02) is OK as long as it is less than 8 days and 2 hours old.] To get back on schedule; change the sample as regular on Tuesday 1/7/2003, but make sure that it is early in the day to avoid the 194 hour limit if you changed on the 30th. Whatever the sample duration, the CAL processes and analyzes ALL samples received. If you have any questions, please call 800-952-7353.

The 2003 CALendar is now on the CAL website. You can find it at the "CALendar" or "What’s New!" links.

Reminder: Return your raingage winterization memo ASAP (if you haven’t already).

CAL and Program Office staff wish you a peaceful and joyful holiday season.

Record Retention - Field Forms and Raingage Charts - We’ve had some questions about how long site operators should store field forms, raingage charts, and monthly data reports. The Network Operations Subcommittee (NOS) agreed that sites should keep data for at least 2 years. The NOS discussion concluded that after 2 years it is highly unlikely that a site operator could retrieve data to provide useful troubleshooting information (given site operator turnover, aging materials, and NADP’s data publication schedule). The CAL performs extensive screening prior to releasing data to the Program Office. The screening process includes site operator contact via FAX, memos, and monthly reports, and should avoid the need to retrieve data > 2 years old. So . . . if you have years worth of pink FORF copies and raingage chart photocopies, feel free to recycle those older than December 2000.
