How to Find Us

CONTACT INFORMATION UPDATES - We’d like to use e-mail and FAX to communicate with and assist you as much as possible. Please fill in the spaces below with your current information. Fax it to (217) 244-3054, Attn: Kathy Douglas or send it with your next mailer. We can then update the information in our SITES database to ensure it is correct. Scott particularly likes to use e-mail to ask questions about site history, site sketches and the like. Of course, he and Jeff prefer that you call them on the 800# PRONTO about potential collector malfunctions!

Our CAL e-mail address is cal@sws.uiuc.edu                                       Web page address is http://nadp.sws.uiuc.edu/cal/

Hello! It’s not too early to start thinking about fall and some of the more seasonal things we need to check concerning your NTN site.

WINTERIZING - Each winter several sites get data invalidated because snow or mixed precipitation is received before the gage is winterized. The memo requesting the removal of the funnel and the addition of antifreeze to your Belfort raingage is enclosed. DO NOT WAIT. If you are getting cold temperatures, go ahead and winterize NOW! See section 5.2.2.1 of the Site Operation Manual or the procedure pages at the back of the CALendar.

AMBIENT SENSOR HEATER CHECKS - This note on a tip from ATS auditor Tom Jones. He notes that quite often operators are forgetting the "cool mode" sensor heater check. The NTN Site Operation Manual says, "Check the temperature of the sensor on the collector by touching the sensor plate (Figure 3-2). Unless the collector has been open within the last few minutes, it should feel cool." Why is this important? If sensor heaters fail they do so in one of two ways. 1) The most common is NO HEAT, you go out, open the bucket for 5 minutes and can feel no heat at the sensor plate. 2) A less common but serious problem is ALL HEAT or constant heat. If you approach the collector and the lid has not been open, it should be cool to the touch. If it is very hot this "ambient heater" may be defective. In this case the collector may miss small rain or snowfall events (which evaporate before the sensor is triggered). In severe cases we have seen melting of the black plastic sensor housing–obviously something to be avoided! Questions? Please call us at 800-952-7353. Thanks.
The CAL Field Operations Training Course has been scheduled for April 8, 9, and 10, 2003. (See the CAL web page "Training" link for more information)
