| Greetings! |
Weve had a few periods of respite
from the heat here in Central Illinois. The corn was "head high by the 4th
of July" and were beginning our long HOT SUMMER period. Perhaps the dry
weather will give our Midwest site operators a chance to submit that USGS Field
Blank sample which has been sitting on the shelf.
LID SEAL
CHANGE RESPONSES--Please get
these forms back to us as soon as possible. We record the condition of all
seals, ensure everyone changes them, and use this information for
collector QC.
EVENT RECORDER TRACE--The
photo on the right highlights one of the most important aspects of your
weekly sampling routine. Does the ER "open" for approximately
the same interval as the rain or snow fall event? Do you know what to do
if they DO NOT agree and what that means? Call me at 1-800-952-7353
if you have questions. Thanks, Scott Dossett |

| Hello out there
in NTN land. I hope this months
report finds you all well and enjoying the bounty of summer. The corn is
12 feet high in central Illinois! I sure hope the mid-Atlantic states
start getting some precipitation soon. |

| THE
NEW NTN OPERATORS MANUAL UPDATE: In late August we will FINALLY print
the first half of the new manual. The second half (the revised Appendices)
will be completed this fall. The new manual is completely revised and now
contains many pictures, new explanatory text, and graphics to illustrate
the text. Our goal is to make this information available electronically on
the NADP/CAL web page and/or in a CD-ROM "searchable" format
within the next year. |
| LID
SEAL CHECK: By now the lid seal you replaced back in July should be
starting to "imprint" on the bucket of the collector. Inspect
yours to ensure it still fits well. (See Figure 1.)
Take care, Scott.

Greetings NTN Site Operators:
Hurricane Floyd moved up the
East coast, frost hit the upper Midwest, and a big tongue of near-freezing
HIGH temperatures covered the northern Rockies; so I guess its time to
welcome Fall!

Removal from the Belfort Raingage
(see Photo):
Each year
a few operators are confused about the timing and procedures for removal
of the funnel from the top cap of the raingage. As freezing temperatures
approach, this topic is worth a review. The timing is easyremove the
funnel before freezing temperatures occur (add antifreeze when removing
the funnel). To remove the funnel (17), attached to the bottom of the top
cap (18), rotate the funnel until its slots clear the beads in the top cap
tube. Store the funnel safely. |

New NTN Site Operation Manual:
The new Site Operations
Manual is at the printers! We expect to ship the manual and a new
three-ring binder to all sites within the next few weeks.
I hope your Indian Summer
season goes well. If you have questions or comments, please call me (Scott
Dossett) at 800-952-7353.
